How to Answer 'Why Should We Hire You?' (2026): Structure and Examples
Updated 4 November 20265 min readBy the KaziMatch careers team
Answer "why should we hire you?" by matching two or three of the job's main requirements to proof from your own experience, then ending with what you will deliver in the role. Keep it under 90 seconds and never compare yourself negatively with other candidates.
This question often comes near the end. It is your chance to make the panel's decision easy.
What the panel is really asking
- Have you understood the job? Do you know what matters most in the role?
- Can you prove you can do it? Not just claim it.
- Will you add value quickly? What will be different because you are there?
The three-part structure
- Requirement: name what the role needs most, using the advert's words.
- Proof: give one specific example or result for each requirement.
- Promise: say what you will bring in the first months, in plain terms.
Pick the two or three requirements that appear most often in the advert or that the panel has stressed during the interview.
Example answers
These examples are fictional. Use your own real results.
Customer service team leader
You need someone who can keep quality high while handling volume, and who can coach new agents. In my current role I handle about 60 contacts a shift with quality scores above 90%, and I have trained eight new agents on our products and systems. I also wrote a billing script that cut repeat calls on one issue. I would bring the same focus on first-contact resolution and coaching to your team from the first month.
Graduate software developer
The advert asks for solid JavaScript, willingness to learn and the ability to work in a team. In my final-year project I built a booking app in React and Node.js with two classmates, and I handled the payment integration. During my internship I fixed bugs across three client websites, which taught me to read other people's code. I learn quickly, I ask questions early, and I am ready to contribute to your product team.
County health clinical officer
You need a clinician who can manage a busy outpatient clinic and support the HIV programme. I see about 50 outpatients a day at my current facility, and I manage a cohort in the comprehensive care clinic with regular viral load follow-up. I also run monthly outreach in remote villages. I would bring that same clinical experience and community focus to this sub-county.
How to prepare your answer
- Highlight the advert. Underline the requirements that appear more than once.
- Match each one to a story. Use your CV bullets and the STAR method for detail if asked.
- Add one number per example if you can defend it.
- Practise the closing line. End with what you will do, not with "so please hire me".
A good fit check before the interview tells you which requirements you meet strongly and where the gaps are. KaziMatch's free fit check compares your CV to the advert so you can choose the strongest proof points.
Mistakes to avoid
- Generic claims. "I am hardworking, honest and a team player" is said by almost everyone.
- Talking about what you need. "I need this job" is not a reason to hire you.
- Criticising other candidates. You do not know them, and it sounds insecure.
- Overpromising. Do not claim results you cannot deliver. Panels remember.
- Repeating your whole CV. Choose the evidence that matters for this job.
Adjust the answer to the level of the job
- Entry level: stress willingness to learn, reliability and evidence from your studies, attachment or volunteering. Panels do not expect years of results.
- Mid level: stress independent delivery. Show results you achieved without close supervision.
- Senior level: stress leadership, judgement and results through others, such as teams you built or systems you improved.
- Public service: add integrity and service to the public. Panels often score these explicitly, so link your proof to the values of public service.
A related question: "What makes you different?"
Some panels ask "What makes you unique?" or "Why you and not someone else?". Use the same structure but lead with the combination of skills that is less common, for example clinical skills plus data reporting, or sales experience plus fluency in a regional language.

Frequently asked questions
- How long should my answer to 'why should we hire you' be?
- About 60 to 90 seconds. Cover two or three key requirements with proof, then close with what you will bring.
- Can fresh graduates answer this question well?
- Yes. Use evidence from your degree, attachment, projects, volunteering or leadership roles, and show willingness to learn.
- Should I mention salary when answering?
- No. Focus on the value you bring. Salary is a separate discussion, usually later in the process.
- What if I do not meet every requirement?
- Focus on the requirements you meet strongly, and if asked about a gap, be honest and explain how you are closing it.
