Job boards, company sites and alerts that work
How to search boards without drowning, where company sites hide their vacancies, and how to set alerts you will actually act on.
Boards
Kenya has general job boards, sector boards (health, development, ICT), and the KaziMatch board, which only lists jobs that employers posted or staff verified. Boards differ in how they are fed: some copy postings from elsewhere (check the original source before applying), some take employer postings directly, some are run by recruitment agencies who post on clients' behalf.
Search well:
- Use several titles for the same function (see the lesson on target roles).
- Filter by county and by date; a posting older than a month is often filled.
- Read the whole posting, including "how to apply". The method of applying is part of the test.
- Note the source. If a board copied a posting from a company site, apply through the company's own channel where possible.
Company career pages
Larger employers, banks, telecoms, universities, hospitals, parastatals and many NGOs list openings on their own websites, sometimes only there. Make a list of twenty organisations you would want to work for and check their careers pages every week or two. Many also post on their LinkedIn pages before anywhere else.
Newspapers and notices
Public bodies and some large private employers still advertise in the daily newspapers, often on particular days. The same notices usually appear on the body's website and on the government advertising portal. If you are targeting public roles, build the habit of checking on those days.
Alerts
An alert is only useful if it is specific enough to be worth opening and broad enough to catch variations:
- One alert per target role, with two or three title variants.
- Narrow by county only if you genuinely will not move.
- Daily for an active search, weekly otherwise.
- When an alert arrives, act the same day: check your fit, decide, apply or discard. Unread alerts pile up and stop meaning anything.
Keep the loop closed
Every job you consider goes into the tracker with its deadline, even if you decide not to apply. In a month you will see patterns: which titles fit, which counties have the work, which boards produced interviews. That is how you tune the search instead of repeating it.
- 01Search boards with several titles, filter by date, and read the 'how to apply' section.
- 02Check twenty target employers' career pages regularly; some jobs appear only there.
- 03Public bodies still advertise in newspapers on set days; those notices also go online.
- 04Set one alert per target role and act on it the day it arrives.
