Why applying everywhere backfires
When you need work urgently, sending one CV to fifty postings feels productive. It rarely works. A generic application usually loses to a tailored one. Many rejections in a row also drain the energy you need for the jobs that truly fit.
Focusing on two or three target roles is slower to set up but faster overall.
Look through three lenses
A good target role sits where three things overlap.
- What you can prove. Your experience gives evidence for most of the requirements.
- What employers are hiring for. The role appears regularly on job boards, in counties where you can work, at your level.
- What you can sustain. The commute, hours, pay and type of work suit your life. A job you leave after a few months costs more than a slower search.
If a role fails one lens, think carefully before chasing it.
Look past job titles
Titles vary between employers. The same work might be called Data Analyst, Reporting Officer or MIS Officer. Focus on what the person does each day, not the label. Search using several titles.
A free fit check on KaziMatch compares your profile with a specific posting. It can help you see quickly whether the evidence is there.
Write your targets down
Choose two or three roles. For each one, read several postings and list the requirements that keep coming up. That list becomes your study guide.
- Requirements you can prove go to the top of your CV.
- Requirements you cannot yet prove are gaps to close through training or experience.
Review every month
The job market moves, and so should your plan. After a month, look back at your applications. Which roles gave you strong matches? Which got responses? Shift your focus towards what is working.
Treat your search as an experiment with feedback, not a single bet.
