What an inventory is
A CV is a short argument for one job. A career inventory is the full record behind it. It lists every role, project, qualification, tool and result you can honestly claim. It also holds the details that make each one believable.
You never send your inventory to anyone. Instead, you cut each CV from it.
Why it saves you time
Without an inventory, people rewrite their CV from memory each time. They forget strong material. They quote different dates or figures in different applications, which raises doubts.
With an inventory, tailoring a CV becomes selection, not invention. You apply faster and more accurately.
What to record for each role
Work through your history from oldest to newest. For each job, note:
- Employer, location and dates in month and year. Employers check these.
- Your real title and what the role actually involved.
- Scope. Money handled, people supervised, customers served, sites covered.
- What happened because of you. Problems solved, targets met, improvements made.
- Tools and methods you used.
- Who could confirm it, with contact details if you have them.
Then do the same for education, certifications, volunteering and any business or project you ran yourself.
Finding the numbers
Do not worry if you cannot remember exact figures. Use honest estimates and mark them as such in your notes. Old payslips, appraisal letters, reports and emails can help. Former colleagues can help too.
Never invent a figure. One follow-up question in an interview will expose it.
Keep adding to it
While you are working, add to your inventory every month. Record the project you finished or the problem you solved. Memory fades quickly, and the people who could confirm your work move on.
