Panel Interview Tips for Kenya (2026): Public Service and County Board Panels

Updated 4 November 20266 min readBy the KaziMatch careers team

To succeed in a Kenyan panel interview, bring your original documents and clearances, prepare short STAR answers for the job's key requirements, learn the basics of the Constitution's values and Chapter Six, and address the whole panel, not just the person who asked. Public service panels usually score every candidate against the same criteria, so clear, structured answers matter.

What a panel interview looks like

A panel is a group of interviewers, often three to seven people, who take turns asking questions. In the public sector you will often face:

  • Public Service Commission (PSC) panels for national government roles
  • County Public Service Board panels for county government roles
  • Board or committee panels at state corporations, universities and some NGOs

Panels often include a chairperson, a technical expert for the role, an HR representative and other members. One person may take notes or score while another asks.

Before the interview

Check the shortlist and instructions

Public bodies usually publish shortlists with interview dates, venues and a list of documents to bring. Read the instructions carefully, including any reporting time. Keep checking the employer's official website and notices.

Prepare your documents

Bring originals and copies of:

Our Chapter Six clearance documents guide explains which ones are typically needed and how long they take. Start early: some take days or weeks.

Research the role and the institution

Read the job description line by line. Know the institution's mandate, recent projects and, for counties, the county's development priorities if they are published.

Common panel questions in Kenya

General

Public service and governance

  • What are the national values and principles of governance in Article 10 of the Constitution?
  • What are the values and principles of public service in Article 232?
  • What does Chapter Six on leadership and integrity mean for a public officer?
  • How would you handle a conflict of interest or an offer of a gift?
  • What is the role of the county government compared to the national government in your field?

Technical

  • Questions on the laws, policies and systems for your role, such as the PFM Act and IFMIS for finance, PPADA for procurement, or professional standards for health and education.

Competency (STAR)

  • Tell us about a time you handled a difficult member of the public.
  • Describe a time you showed integrity under pressure.

Use the STAR method for these.

During the interview

  • Arrive early and be polite to everyone, including reception and security staff.
  • Greet the panel and wait to be invited to sit.
  • Answer the person who asked, then make eye contact with the rest of the panel as you continue.
  • Keep answers structured. Panels often score against set points; clear answers help them award marks.
  • Ask for a question to be repeated if you did not hear it. That is better than guessing.
  • Be honest about gaps. Say what you know and how you would find the rest.
  • Present documents when asked, neatly arranged in the order listed on the shortlist.

Example answer (fictional)

Question: What does integrity mean to you as a public officer?

Answer: To me it means using public resources only for their purpose, declaring conflicts of interest and being accountable for decisions. For example, in my current role I declared a conflict when a relative's company bid for a contract, and I stepped out of that evaluation. I believe public trust depends on officers doing this consistently.

After the interview

  • Note the questions you were asked while they are fresh.
  • Results are often published or communicated directly. Watch the official channels only.
  • Never pay anyone who promises to "fix" a panel or guarantee a job. That is a scam and a crime. See our job scams guide.
